16TH CONGRESS ON THE UPDEA
The 16th Congress of the UPDEA (the Union of Producers, Transporters and Distributors of Electrical Power in Africa) will take place in Nairobi, Kenya on 24th to 26th June 2008.
Kenya was selected to host the congress at the 15th Congress held in Accra, Ghana in June 2005. The Kenya Electricity Generating Company, KenGen will be hosting the Congress in collaboration with other local industry stakeholders.
The theme of this year’s congress is Good governance of national power sectors as a key factor for realization of access to electricity for all the peoples of Africa.’
During the Congress, KenGen’s Managing Director, Mr. Edward Njoroge will take over as the UPDEA.
PARTICIPANTS WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND
The congress will bring together 300 to 400 members of the UPDEA including CEO’s and senior officials of African power utilities. It will provide an idea forum for the exchange of experiences between Africa power utilities, development partners, specialized institutions involved in the Africa power sector and Africa governments.
Other participants will be exhibitors from various utilities and manufacturers of power industry equipment who will be showcasing their products.
ABOUT UPDEA CONGRESS
The UPDEA congress had distinguished itself as a prime meeting place for all Africa power utilities. It has been held in various African cities every 3 years over the last 15 years.
The UPDEA Congress also incorporates an exhibition for utilities and manufacturers of power equipment. to showcase their products.
A BRIEF ABOUT UPDEA
UPDEA is a permanent member of the Executive Council of the AFREC (African Energy Commission) and a privileged partner of the NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) and the African Union Commission. The association has 52 active member countries and 11 affiliate member firms from around the globe.
The 16th Congress topic is in line with new vision of UPDEA to be a primary catalyst in the realization of access to electricity for all the peoples of Africa.
