Thermal Energy engines are fired on heavy fuel oil (HFO) to produce electric energy. KenGen two large thermal power plant in Kipevu, in Mombasa County and two other smaller one in Muhoroni, Kisumu County. KenGen employs the latest technology in plant monitoring and supervision, safety, sound, attenuation and exhaust air emission dispersion control and efficient treatment to ensure environmental protection.

Today KenGen has about 254MW of thermal energy which accounts for about 13% of its total installed capacity.
