Consultancy Projects undertaken
KenGen has offered consultancy services to both local and international organizations. Some of the consultancy services undertaken include the following :
1. OrPower4, Inc
KenGen geothermal experts have continued to offer professional services to the OrPower4, Inc. These services have included well tests and geochemical analysis of well data.
2. Geoscientific Investigations of the Kapisya and Chinyunyu Geothermal Fields, Zambia
In 2004, ZESCO of Zambia, requested KenGen to carry out an assessment of the Kapisya and Chinyunyu geothermal prospects with a view to rehabilitating, commissioning and investigating the possibility of expanding the Kapisya plant capacity. Geoscientific studies were carried out by a team of geothermal experts from KenGen between 15th October and 15th November 2006. The work carried out included geological investigations, radon and carbon dioxide gas measurements, and geophysical investigations. The investigations were successfully carried out and a report submitted to ZESCO.
3. Geophysical surveys in Lake Turkana area
KenGen collaborated with the National Oil Corporation to carry out geophysical studies in the Lake Turkana area in 2006.
Upcoming consultancy projects
The following are some of the consultancy services KenGen anticipates to offer once the final details of engagement are finalized :
1. Geoscientific investigations in the Comoros
2. Geophysical investigations in Djibouti
3. Geoscientific investigations in Rwanda
COLLABORATION
KenGen cooperates with national and international institutions in carrying out important research on various aspects of geothermal development, Kenya Rift structure and ground water sources.
Some of the areas of cooperation have included:
1. Geothermal Exploration
Refining geothermal exploration via geochemical modeling of young volcanic centers in the Kenya Rift. The research was done in collaboration between KenGen and the University of Texas at El Paso, USA and funded by NSF for the period 2001-2003.
2. Geothermal Reservoir Management
Use of stable isotopes in geothermal reservoir management in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Funded by IAEA.
3. Joint Geophysical Imaging
Research into the use of combined MT, TEM and seismology in refining the exploration for geothermal reservoirs. Project is funded by GEF and implemented in collaboration with Duke University, USA. The project started in the year 2002.
4. Hydrogeology of the Lake Naivasha area
A cooperative venture between KenGen, the Lake Naivasha Riparian Association and ITC, Netherlands in research on the hydrology of the Lake Naivasha basin.
5. ARGeo Project
KenGen is a member of the African Rift Geothermal project (ARGEO), which is funded by UNEP/GEF with the aim of promoting the development of geothermal resources in Eastern Africa.
6. Other Collaboration efforts
KenGen has continued to collaborate with local universities as well as other government departments in various subject interests. Some of the Institutions with which KenGen has collaborated with include Moi University School of Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi Institute of Nuclear Science, and Ministry of Energy Department of Geothermal.
