The station, situated 220km North East of Nairobi was commissioned in 1989 with two vertical generating units rated 72MW each. The machines were upgraded to 84MW each in 2008/9. It has a 585 million cubic metres reservoir equipped with a natural spillway, a low-level outlet at the main dam, an emergency spillway.

Kipevu I Diesel Plant, commissioned in 1999, is a thermal plant which has six four-stroke diesel engines. The engines run on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) at loads above 6.5MW and Industrial Diesel Oil (IDO) for start up to 6.5MW. The diesel engines are medium speed engines which drive synchronous generators at a synchronous speed of 428 revs/min.

The Tana Power Station lies just upstream of the confluence of the Sagana and Maragua Rivers to form River Tana. The bigger units draw water from Sagana River while the smaller units use water from Maragua River. This is a run-of-river plant with small sized dams having low water storage capacity: Merila dam on Sagana River and Maragua dam on Maragua River.

Wanjii power station is situated in Murang’a County 80km from Nairobi. This is a run-of-river plant with a small sized dam having low water storage capacity. It has Mathioya dam on Mathioya River and Maragua dam on Maragua River. The source for the two rivers is the Aberdare forest. The station has a total capacity of 7.4MW.

Sagana power station is situated in Nyeri County between Karatina and Nyeri towns 140km from Nairobi. This is a run-of-river plant with a small sized dam having low water storage capacity. The plant is on Sagana River that has tributaries starting from Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare forests.

A new generating machine was installed in in 2013 replacing the old one which was installed in 1930. This increased the rating of the plant to a capacity of 0.43MW up from 0.38MW. The new machine was installed by Gilbert Gilkes, UK who were also the original manufacturer of the 1930 plant.

Sang’oro is a cascade power station 4.7km from the Sondu Miriu power station. Water is conveyed from Sondu Miriu tailrace through a 4.7 km channel and a 133.6m length penstock from the head tank to the power station. Water from the station is released through a tailrace back to Sondu Miriu River.

Sondu Miriu Power Station is situated in Kisumu County , 60km from Kisumu town and 350km from Nairobi. It draws water from the Sondu Miriu River whose main catchment area is Mau Forest. Sondu is a run-of-river scheme with an intake weir and holding pond that discharges the required water with a net head of 178m via a 6.2 km tunnel and a 1.2 km penstock to the vertical Francis turbines.

This is the biggest hydro power station in East Africa in terms of installed capacity. Two vertical Francis turbines drive generators rated at 85MVA each at a net head of 135m. The power produced is transmitted to Kamburu 132kV substation, via two 132kV circuits and the station is remotely controlled from Kamburu.
