The 45MW Olkaria 1 Geothermal Power Plant is located at the Olkaria geothermal field in the Rift Valley. This was the first geothermal power plant in Africa commissioned in 1980. Due to prolonged operational years and adverse wear and tear, the Plant had exceeded its economic lifespan therefore prompting the need for rehabilitation of the Plant.
The objectives of Olkaria I Rehabilitation Project is to rehabilitate the existing Power Plant, Steam gathering system and construction of Gas Insulated Sub Station with an aim of increasing the installed capacity from 45MW to 63.3MW while prolonging operational life of the Plant by more than 25 years.
