Mombasa, Monday, June 18, 2018: Kenya’s leading power producer, KenGen, has today announced that it is turning to innovation to enhance efficiencies and increase productivity as it seeks to roll out power generation projects worth Kshs. 1 Trillion over the next decade.

KenGen, which produces more than 70 % of the power consumed in the country, seeks to explore innovative concepts that will transform its approach to power generation with a view to consolidating its position as the market leader, while increasing shareholder value and minimizing its carbon footprint.

The KenGen Board of Directors has allotted 351 million ordinary shares left over during the recent Rights Issue to the South African Government Employees Pension Fund.

Kenyan and South African regulatory authorities have approved the allotment to the Public Investment Corporation SOC Limited which is the authorised representative of the fund. The development means that KenGen has exhausted all the shares it floated during the Rights Issue and enables the company to raise additional Ksh2.3billion towards financing of new geothermal and wind power projects.

KenGen commissions Sh 1.6M earth dam to alleviate water shortage
Mbeere, Wednesday February 15, 2017…
KenGen, today commissioned Ngurunga dam to alleviate water shortage currently faced by 500 local residents and thousands of livestock in Mbeere area of Embu County.
The project located off the Mutuovale-Kiambere Road, about 3 km along the Cieria Road, is an excavation across Kutendera, a seasonal stream in Mutitu sub -location in Mutitu location, Muminji ward, Mbeere North Sub-county. The dam will serve 320 cattle and 4000 sheep and goats and will also improve safety by reducing crocodile attacks in the area.
Speaking when he commissioned the project, KenGen Chairman Mr Joshua Choge said the Ngurunga dam will provide relief to the local community as it is located in an area that experiences semi-arid climatic conditions with annual rainfall of between 300 to 650 mm.

December 10, 2014….Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has finally connected to the national grid the entire 280 MW of Olkaria geothermal power, a move that is expected to further lower the cost of electricity in the country.
Last week, Olkaria 1 additional Unit 5, the last phase of the single largest geothermal project in Africa, begun reliability tests and is now adding 72 MW to the national grid. The tests will be completed at the end of this month.

The new man at the helm of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), Albert Mugo, has said that his core focus will be on capacity expansion and further diversifying the company’s power generation mix into geothermal and coal sources.

Speaking at his maiden press conference as Managing Director and CEO of Kenya’s largest power producer, Mugo pledged to fast-track various key projects the company is presently undertaking including two geothermal plants with a capacity of 280MW expected to come on-stream by mid this year.

December 1 30 2015… Kenya's main power producer, KenGen, has enhanced output from hydro with the current heavy rains filling up the country’s major generating dams at the Seven Forks in Eastern Kenya.
Energy planners say all the dams in the cascade have attained their spilling levels while the main Masinga Dam is still two metres to spilling at 1054.32 meters above sea level (masl).
The water levels at Kiambere- which is the lowest dam in the cascade, stood at 700.23 masl and is spilling 46 cubic meters (or 46 million litres) per second. At Masinga, the highest dam level is attained when the water reaches full supply level of 1,056.5 masl, beyond which the dam spills.
